As a solo traveller and passionate horse rider, I’ve always sought experiences combining adventure, culture, and the open wilderness. In the past 20 years, I embarked on several horse-riding holidays, but those in Argentina changed me in ways I didn’t expect. Argentina’s vast landscapes, rich traditions, and incredible hospitality made them all memorable journeys, especially for someone like me who thrives on the connection between rider and horse.

Estancia experiences in Argentina

My time in Argentina always begins in the heart of the country’s rural countryside. I stayed in several traditional estancias (ranches) that dot the northern pampas and foothills of the Andes. These estancias are not just places to stay but are deeply rooted in Argentina’s gaucho culture. Here, I lived alongside real-life cowboys, sharing stories over asados (barbecues) and learning the art of gaucho horsemanship.

From the moment I saddled up, I felt the immense bond that the gauchos have with their horses. Their skills are passed down through generations, and they’re always happy to share their knowledge. At every estancia, I was given a horse that felt like an extension of myself—a trustworthy companion for long rides through rolling hills, forests, and rivers. The beauty of estancia life is the balance of adventure and relaxation. After hours of riding, I would return to cosy, rustic lodges to enjoy local food and a glass of Malbec and watch the stars over the vast Argentine sky.

Crossing the Andes on horseback

The highlight of my horse-riding trips, though, were the Andes crossing. Several days on horseback, trekking through some of the most breathtaking landscapes I’ve ever seen, was magical. Most rides start in Mendoza, famous for its vineyards and snow-capped peaks, and take riders through valleys, across rivers, and up rugged mountain trails. Each day, we covered ground that felt more remote, the air crisper and the mountains towering higher above us.

Crossing the Andes on horseback brings a sense of connection—not only to nature but to history itself. General José de San Martín famously used this route during Argentina’s fight for independence, and you can’t help but feel the weight of those footsteps (or hoofprints) beneath you.

The horses, strong and sure-footed, handle the rugged terrain with ease. One of the advantages of horse-riding holidays is that they take you places you can’t reach by foot or car. We rode through paths that felt untouched by time, witnessing wildlife like condors soaring overhead and even herds of guanacos native to the region.

A specific riding skill is NOT necessary to realize the Andes crossing on horseback; you don’t need any previous instruction or practice. Horseback riding trips are usually designed for anyone, expert or beginner. The horses are tame and calm and used to mountainous paths. The days vary between 6 and 8 hours on horseback. The maximum altitude above sea level reached 4500 meters.

The difficulty is due to the conditions of the mountain. The path is irregular and narrow in some sections. The activity is challenging due to geographical and weather problems. High temperatures, winds, snow, sun, rain, and other inclement weather can occur. You must be strong to overcome these situations and lack everyday conveniences.

The 6-day Andes crossing horse riding holiday in Argentina and Chile: treat yourself to an extraordinary trek across the Andes Mountains Range, passing beautiful valleys between the highest peaks of the Andes. This unmissable expedition starts in Argentina and finishes in Chile. It is one of the world’s most spectacular trekking experiences and should not be missed. The high mountain pass Portillo Argentino 4380 m, located in the Argentinean Range, is the gate to an old trail used by ‘arrieros’ (muleteers) and travellers, such as Charles Darwin and General San Martín, to cross the Andes.

10-day legendary Andes crossing horse riding holiday in Paso de Los Patos from Chile to Argentina: ride through the legendary crossing of the Andes by San Martin and the Army of Independence from Chile to Argentina with Pioneros Riding Tours. Thought for a small group of nature and history enthusiasts, this mythical journey draws like a magnet; it is probably the trip of a lifetime!

12-day horse riding tour in the magical Atlantic Coast of Tierra Del Fuego: The Centro Hípico Fin Del Mundo organises this 10-day expedition riding through the most magical and wild place of Tierra del Fuego, Peninsula Mitre. During these days, you will see mythical places, astonishing shipwrecks, traditional gaucho shelters and estancias, stunning landscapes, and the incredible wildlife of Patagonia.

Why Argentina?

Well, first of all, it is my home, but more than that, Argentina offers a perfect mix of adventure, culture, and natural beauty. Horse riding is ingrained in the country’s heritage, so you’ll feel welcome and supported whether you’re a novice or an experienced rider. The horses are bred for endurance and agility, making even challenging treks through the mountains feel safe and exhilarating.

For a solo traveller, these trips were everything I could have dreamed of. Riding for long stretches gave me time to reflect and soak in the immensity of the world around me. The warmth of the locals, the camaraderie of other travellers I met along the way, and the unspoken bond between horse and rider created a sense of connection that made the journey unforgettable.

A horse-riding holiday in Argentina is more than just an adventure—it’s a journey that connects you to nature, culture, and yourself. Whether you’re crossing the mighty Andes or galloping across the pampas, the freedom of riding through such vast, untouched landscapes on horseback is something every traveller should experience at least once. It’s the perfect combination of challenge, solitude, and beauty. And trust me, once you’ve ridden through Argentina’s wild lands, you’ll carry a part of it with you forever.
