During my 47-day remote working adventure across Norway in 2023, I had the pleasure of spending two unforgettable days in Narvik—a town that has grown far beyond its storied past. Discovering Narvik wasn’t something I had planned. I initially included it in my itinerary only because a few weeks before my trip, I watched a captivating Netflix film about World War II entitled “Narvik”.
But from the quick, scenic bus ride that heralds your arrival to the myriad of winter activities available, Narvik proved to be one of the highlights of my first week in this fantastic country.
Getting there
One of the first things that struck me was the ease and beauty of the journey to Narvik. The bus ride from Tromsø was both quick and scenic, offering sweeping views of snow-dusted mountains, icy fjords, and peaceful Arctic landscapes.

Travellers are advised to check local bus schedules in advance—services are punctual and comfortable, with modern coaches equipped for the winter chill. For solo female travellers, this mode of transport is efficient and an excellent opportunity to soak in the landscape and perhaps chat with fellow adventurers.
Pro tips:
- Booking: Secure your ticket ahead of time, especially during peak winter months.
- Warmth: Bring layers, as the temperature can drop unexpectedly during the journey.
- Photography: Keep your camera ready—the route is exceptionally photogenic.
A glimpse into history: beyond the war stories
Narvik’s name is inextricably linked with its pivotal role during World War II. Once a strategic battleground for German and Allied forces, the town still holds echoes of its past. While history buffs may want to visit local museums such as the Narvik War Museum, which provides insight into the region’s military heritage, it’s equally important to appreciate how Narvik has transformed over the years.
Highlights for history enthusiasts:
- Narvik War Museum: Discover detailed exhibits on the battles fought in this region and gain a deeper understanding of the town’s historical significance.
- Historical landmarks: Wander around to see monuments and plaques commemorating past events, offering a quiet space for reflection.
- Local tours: Consider joining a guided tour to gain insider knowledge on lesser-known wartime stories and anecdotes. Every hotel can recommend selected guides and experiences, and I always trust their expertise because I know that they want/need to offer their guest the best of stays…

Winter sports and skiing
Today, Narvik is renowned for its outstanding winter sports facilities, particularly skiing. The town boasts excellent downhill and cross-country skiing conditions, making it an ideal destination for those looking to hit the slopes.
I hadn’t planned on enjoying the outdoors during my trip, but on my second day, I discovered that people ski even at night! This revelation marked the start of my skiing adventures in Norway. I soon realised that I could ski for a few hours each day almost anywhere I went. It truly felt like paradise!

Skiing in Narvik:
- Narvikfjellet Ski Resort: Located just outside the town centre, Narvikfjellet offers a variety of runs suitable for all levels—from beginners to seasoned skiers. The slopes provide a thrilling descent and stunning panoramic views of the surrounding fjords. Amazing!!!
- Equipment rentals: Numerous local shops offer quality ski equipment, ensuring you can easily rent gear for a day (or several) on the slopes, even if you haven’t brought your own.
- Ski schools and guided tours: For those new to skiing or want to explore off the beaten track, local instructors offer lessons and guided tours specifically for solo travellers, and you can book directly from the resort front desk. During my second hour on the slopes, I took advantage of Sven’s pro tips and experience and had a blast!
Practical tips for ski enthusiasts:
- Dress appropriately: Layer with moisture-wicking base layers, a warm mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell.
- Plan your runs: Check the daily weather and slope conditions to ensure the best mountain experience, as you can reach the first ski lift within a few minutes’ walking distance from the city centre.
Excursions and day trips from Narvik
Narvik is a destination and a fantastic base for day trips and excursions. Plenty of options are available if you’re keen to explore the surrounding fjords or venture out for a more in-depth cultural experience.
Must-do day trips:
- Fjord tours: Embark on a guided tour to explore the nearby fjords. These trips offer a unique perspective on the region’s dramatic natural beauty, with towering cliffs and serene waters.
- Hiking and snowshoeing: For those who love outdoor adventures, there are several marked trails around Narvik. Even in winter, guided snowshoeing tours provide an exhilarating way to explore the pristine landscapes.
- Northern Lights hunting: Witnessing the Northern Lights is one of the most magical experiences above the Polar Circle. Join a local tour that takes you away from the city lights for the best viewing opportunities.
- Cultural excursions: Discover neighbouring towns and local art galleries that showcase Norway’s rich cultural heritage. These day trips offer a break from outdoor activities and a deeper dive into the local way of life.
A historic train journey: a day trip to Abisko
For a truly memorable experience that marries history with natural splendour, consider a day trip by train to Abisko in Sweden. This scenic journey along the same historic railway—once a critical artery during World War II—provides breathtaking Arctic landscapes and a tangible link to the past.

Highlights of the Abisko train trip:
- Historical significance: The railway that connects Narvik and Abisko was pivotal during World War II, facilitating the transport of vital iron ore from Swedish mines. Its strategic importance has left an indelible mark on the region’s history, offering a unique perspective for history enthusiasts.
- Scenic views: The train ride is a feast for the eyes as you glide through snow-clad forests, frozen lakes, and rugged mountains. The journey offers an intimate glimpse into the serene beauty of Arctic Sweden.
- Abisko National Park: Once in Abisko, take the time to explore the famed Abisko National Park. Known for its clear skies and minimal light pollution, it’s one of the best places in the world to witness the Northern Lights.
This day trip is an excellent addition to your Narvik itinerary. It allows you to explore a neighbouring country and immerse yourself in a mix of natural beauty and wartime history—all in one journey.
Start early to make the most of your day!
