A memorable 2-day stay in Kristiansund is the perfect stop between Trondheim and Ålesund.

If you’re a female solo traveller seeking a scenic Norwegian adventure, look no further than Kristiansund. Tucked between Trondheim and Ålesund, this charming coastal city offers the ideal break on your journey. I spent two days here during my 47-day trip through Norway, travelling by ferry to fully appreciate Norway’s iconic fjords. Whether you’re a nature lover, a film buff, or simply looking to explore a new destination, Kristiansund has plenty to offer.

Getting there by ferry

To truly immerse yourself in Norway’s stunning maritime landscapes, I highly recommend travelling by ferry. I used the Hurtigruten website to book my journey from Trondheim to Kristiansund, which allowed me to savour the breathtaking fjord views en route. A tip for solo travellers: if you prefer breaking up your journey into single stretches rather than booking an entire cruise, you’ll need to switch to the Norwegian version of the website. This is because other language versions typically only sell package deals. On my long Norwegian adventure, I also occasionally treated myself to a cabin and breakfast—perfect for recharging after a day of exploring.

Day 1: exploring Kristiansund’s highlights

Stroll around the harbour
Kristiansund’s harbour area is brimming with life. Colourful buildings line the waterfront, giving the city a picturesque charm. Enjoy a leisurely stroll and soak up the bustling atmosphere of fishing boats and ferries coming and going. This harbour served as the fictional Estorch in the 2013 James Bond film Skyfall, where it was portrayed as the birthplace of Bond’s mentor, Rafael. Film enthusiasts can easily spot several locations featured in those adrenaline-pumping scenes.

Visit the Klipfish Museum
Norway’s coastal heritage is deeply tied to the dried and salted cod known as klippfisk (clipfish). At the Klipfish Museum, you’ll learn about its history and significance in Kristiansund’s development. This fascinating insight into the city’s culinary traditions is a must for culture vultures and foodies alike.

Hop on the historic Sundbåten Ferry
One of the most charming ways to explore Kristiansund is by taking the Sundbåten, a small historical ferry service that connects the city’s main islands—Kirkelandet, Innlandet, Gomalandet, and Nordlandet. Operating since 1876, it is believed to be one of the world’s oldest public transport services still in use. Not only does this short ferry ride offer a scenic perspective of Kristiansund’s harbour, it also gives you a glimpse into the city’s maritime heritage. The Sundbåten runs frequently, making it easy to hop on and off as you wander around the different islands. I loved it!

Try Local Seafood
No stay in Kristiansund would be complete without sampling the local fare. Fresh fish and seafood abound—treat yourself to a hearty bowl of bacalao (a traditional tomato-based cod stew) at one of the cosy waterfront restaurants.

Day 2: the Atlantic Ocean Road adventure

One of the main reasons I chose to stop in Kristiansund was its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean Road or Atlanterhavsveien in Norwegian. Named one of the world’s most spectacular drives, this 8.3-kilometre route connects small islands via a series of sweeping bridges.

  • Scenic views: Be prepared for jaw-dropping ocean vistas, dramatic skies, and the occasional stormy wave crashing near the road.
  • Photography opportunities: The undulating bridges make for incredible snapshots—perfect for both your travel album and social media. Yet again, a James Bond set, this one for the car chase in No Time to Die.
  • Outdoor activities: Nature lovers can go hiking, fishing, or find a quiet spot to breathe in the fresh sea air.

If you don’t want to rent a car, consider joining a guided tour from Kristiansund to experience this phenomenal feat of engineering.

James Bond’s connection

Kristiansund gained international attention when parts of the 2013 James Bond film Skyfall were set here. As mentioned, the harbour doubled as Estorch, the birthplace of Bond’s mentor, Rafael. This city’s dramatic coastal scenery provided the backdrop for several thrilling stunts and action scenes. If you’re a Bond enthusiast, see if you can recognise any familiar spots as you explore Kristiansund’s waterfront.

You’ll certainly recognise the bridges built to connect the island of Averøy with the mainland. This famous part of the Atlantic Ocean Road starts near Vevang and ends on the mentioned island, but it’s actually a collection of 8 bridges, hopping over eight coastal islands. Stunning!

Practical tips for a female solo traveller

  1. Safety: Norway is generally very safe, but do take standard precautions. Keep an eye on your belongings and be aware of your surroundings.
  2. Accommodation: Kristiansund offers a mix of hotels, guesthouses, and hostels. Book early to secure a spot with a waterfront view. I stayed at the Thon Hotel Kristiansund, a waterfront property on Innlandet Island opposite the city centre. It offers free Wi-Fi, yummy meals and a lovely terrace with sea views.

Continuing your journey to Ålesund

From Kristiansund, I continued my adventure to Ålesund via the Hurtigruten ferry, again taking in the spellbinding fjord scenery. Known for its Art Nouveau architecture, Ålesund is a destination not to be missed. Be sure to climb up to Aksla viewpoint for panoramic vistas of the city and surrounding islands—an ideal way to cap off your Norwegian odyssey.

Kristiansund is a gem for any traveller, especially those journeying solo. From its connection to Skyfall and the nearby Atlantic Ocean Road to its scenic harbour and fascinating maritime history, this Norwegian city is sure to enchant. Travelling by ferry not only gave me remarkable views of the fjords but also lent a sense of timeless romance to the journey. If you plan your next solo adventure in Norway, consider a two-day stay in Kristiansund—you won’t regret it.
