As always on this blog, the choice of who to work with is mine, and I only ever say yes to places I would genuinely want to experience myself. This one, I very much do.

There are birthdays, and then there are the birthdays you decide to turn into something you will both remember for the rest of your lives. My partner Danilo has one coming at the end of January, and rather than a dinner and a cake, I have been quietly planning something else entirely: a joyful escape to the Maldives, to JOALI.

I want to be honest with you, as I always am here. I have not been yet. This is not a review written from a hammock with a cocktail in hand; it is the story of why, out of every possible place in the world, this is the one I have chosen for an occasion that matters, and how I am planning it. When we go, I will tell you everything, the good and the less good, as I always do. For now, let me show you what drew me in.

The turquoise lagoon and ivory sands of JOALI's Raa Atoll

Two islands, two different dreams

The first thing to understand about JOALI is that it is not one resort but two, set in the same pristine Raa Atoll, in the northern Maldives, and each with its own soul.

JOALI Maldives, on Muravandhoo Island, is the original: an art-immersive island where a collection of works unfolds across the sands and among the palms, a place conceived around creativity, indulgence and a certain joie de vivre. This is the one calling to me, because a holiday that feeds the eye and the imagination, not just the body, is exactly my kind of luxury.

JOALI BEING, on Bodufushi Island in the same atoll, is something rarer still: the first dedicated wellbeing island in the Maldives, opened in late 2021, built around transformational wellbeing programmes that weave together ancient wisdom and modern science, in search of a state they beautifully call “weightlessness”. I am setting it aside for this trip, since a milestone birthday calls for celebration more than a wellness reset, but I confess I am already imagining a future return.

Why JOALI, and why for this

I run a small hotel myself, on the Ligurian coast, and it has made me a difficult guest in the best sense: I notice everything, and I am moved less by thread counts than by intention. What made me choose JOALI is that its luxury seems to come with a point of view.

The brand describes itself as driven by a commitment to sustainability and female empowerment, and to what it calls joyful, immersive living. I am wary, professionally, of resorts that wear sustainability as a marketing coat, and I will be looking closely when I am there. But a five-star Maldivian island that even frames itself around responsibility and the empowerment of women is speaking a language I care about deeply, and it is not the language most luxury resorts choose. That, as much as the turquoise water, is why JOALI reached me.

Where we will stay: the Luxury Sunset Water Villa with Pool

With our budget set, we have chosen the Luxury Sunset Water Villa with Pool at JOALI Maldives, and I cannot pretend I am not counting the days.

A villa perched over the lagoon, with our own pool and the whole Indian Ocean turning gold in the evening, is precisely the kind of setting a once-in-a-long-while birthday deserves. Waking over the water, stepping straight from the deck into the sea, watching the sun go down with nowhere else to be: this is the picture I keep returning to when the Ligurian winter gets grey. You can see the villa and the resort here.

Planning notes, for you and for me

If, like me, you are dreaming of JOALI for something special, a few honest planning thoughts:

The Maldives is a long way, and late January sits in the dry, sunny high season, which is the best time to go and also the busiest and priciest, so book well ahead. Getting to the Raa Atoll from Malé is part of the adventure, and the resort arranges the transfer; it is worth asking exactly how when you book, as it shapes your arrival day. And an over-water villa with a pool is a serious indulgence, so this is a trip to plan deliberately, the way I plan all the ones that matter: decide what the occasion is really about, spend where it counts, and let the rest be simple.

I will report back properly once Danilo and I have actually been, camera and honest eye in hand. Until then, if you want to start your own JOALI story, you can explore both islands here.

Here is to the birthdays we turn into memories.

Frequently asked questions

Where is JOALI in the Maldives?

JOALI has two islands in the Raa Atoll, in the northern Maldives. JOALI Maldives is an art-immersive luxury resort on Muravandhoo Island, while JOALI BEING, its sister property on Bodufushi Island in the same atoll, is a dedicated wellbeing island. Both are reached by transfer from Malé, arranged by the resort.

What is the difference between JOALI Maldives and JOALI BEING?

JOALI Maldives is the original resort, built around immersive art, private villas and joyful luxury living. JOALI BEING, opened in late 2021, is the first wellbeing island of its kind in the Maldives, centred on transformational wellbeing programmes that combine ancient wisdom and modern science. One is for celebration and creativity, the other for deep wellness and reset.

What kind of accommodation does JOALI offer?

JOALI offers private villas, including over-water villas with their own pools such as the Luxury Sunset Water Villa with Pool, as well as beach and larger residence options across its two islands. Each island has its own distinct range of villas and suites.

When is the best time to visit JOALI in the Maldives?

The Maldivian dry season, roughly November to April, offers the sunniest, calmest weather and is the most popular and expensive time to visit, so booking well ahead is essential, especially around the December-to-January peak. The green season is quieter and more affordable but wetter.

Is JOALI a sustainable resort?

JOALI describes itself as driven by a commitment to sustainability and female empowerment, alongside its philosophy of joyful, immersive living. As with any luxury resort, it is worth looking at the specifics of those commitments when you visit; the brand’s choice to frame itself around responsibility and the empowerment of women is notable in the luxury Maldivian market.
