The Alma Histórica Hotel is the best hotel in Montevideo, located right in the heart of the town, on pretty Zabala square in the historic district of the town, in an ancient and beautifully renovated colonial building.
From the moment I entered it, I felt cuddled! My first thought was, “it smells so good!” and it really does, both in the elegant lobby and in the room; then I met the most friendly and welcoming staff who does everything to have you feel at home and fully enjoy the stay in Montevideo.
I was shown up to the room after a very efficient and quick check-in, and I couldn’t be happier when the door opened on a classy and charming female-style bedroom! I stayed two nights in Dona Delmira Agustini’s room: elegantly furnished and decorated in the shades of pink, with two balconies and a nice bathroom; this room is dedicated to a poet who specialized in female sexuality. In the bathroom, I found homemade fruity soaps and more elegant details and felt even happier!
All rooms are dedicated to famous Uruguayans throughout history, and as soon as I was told this, I asked if I could see the one named after Carlos Gardel. They showed me the Don Carlos room the following morning: decorated in beige and gray, with red detailing and lots of classy memorabilia. I loved it!
One of the hotel’s highlights is its beautiful, sophisticated library with a rich collection of books and antiques.
The breakfast room is also beautiful, with mirrors, chandeliers, and very aristocratic furniture and tableware. The breakfast itself is the only detail I would improve, but this is only because I like it salty, and they serve the traditional Uruguayan sweet one…
I will certainly stay here during my next stay in Montevideo on my way to Punta del Este, and I will for sure ask the staff for more tips on where to eat and drink in town. The tango tiny restaurant they booked for me was amazing!

Thanks to my previous job and often for pleasure, I spent almost more time in hotels than at home in the last seventeen years. Here are those I consider special places not to be missed. Those I truly hope to come back to again and again…
