I dind’t think exploring Phuket was worth it, at least at first. Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, a tropical paradise with stunning beaches, rich culture, and vibrant nightlife. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a taste of local life, Phuket has something for everyone. The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to April when the weather is pleasant and the sea is calm.

Here’s a guide on what to do and visit in this captivating destination.

Start with the beaches

Phuket is famous for its beaches, each with its unique charm.

Patong Beach: This is the most popular beach in Phuket, perfect for those who love a lively atmosphere. With plenty of bars, restaurants, and water sports, it’s ideal for both day and night activities.

Kata Beach: If you prefer something quieter, Kata Beach is known for its clear waters and laid-back vibe. It’s a favourite among surfers during the rainy season and great for families year-round.

Freedom Beach: For a more secluded experience, head to Freedom Beach. Accessible only by boat or a steep hike, its unspoiled beauty and calm waters make it a hidden gem.

Visit the Big Buddha

A trip to Phuket wouldn’t be complete without visiting the iconic Big Buddha. Sitting majestically on Nakkerd Hill, this 45-meter-tall statue offers panoramic views of the island. The serene atmosphere is perfect for reflection, and you can also learn about the local Buddhist culture here.

Explore Old Phuket Town

Phuket Town is a fascinating blend of Sino-Portuguese architecture and modern Thai culture. Wander through the streets of Old Phuket Town, where you’ll find colourful colonial buildings, quirky cafés, and bustling markets. The vibrant street art and unique shops on Thalang Road are a must-see for those intrigued by local culture.

Take a day trip to the Phi Phi Islands

A short boat ride from Phuket will take you to the stunning Phi Phi Islands. Famous for being a film location for “The Beach,” these islands boast dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters, and vibrant marine life. Snorkeling, diving, and sunbathing on Maya Bay are must-do activities. Remember always to follow safety guidelines when engaging in water activities, such as wearing a life jacket and being aware of your surroundings.

Phang Nga Bay & James Bond Island

Another unforgettable day trip is to Phang Nga Bay, known for its limestone karsts and emerald-green waters. A highlight of this tour is a visit to James Bond Island, where “The Man with the Golden Gun” was filmed. You can explore the bay on a traditional longtail boat or kayak through the hidden caves and lagoons.

Adventure in the jungle

Phuket is not all about beaches; the island is also home to lush jungles and a variety of adventure activities. For a thrill, try zip-lining through the treetops at Hanuman World or embark on a jungle trek to see some of Phuket’s incredible waterfalls, such as Bang Pae or Ton Sai. The range of activities will surely excite adventure seekers.

Wat Chalong and Phuket’s temples

Phuket is rich in Buddhist temples, with Wat Chalong being the most famous. This beautifully decorated temple complex is a centre of local spirituality. Another impressive site is Wat Phra Thong, where you can see the half-buried Buddha statue, a relic with an interesting legend.

Nightlife at Bangla Road

For those who enjoy the nightlife, Bangla Road in Patong is where Phuket comes alive after dark. This bustling street is lined with bars, nightclubs, and entertainment venues. Whether you’re looking for live music, dance clubs, or just a lively evening, Bangla Road has it all.

Indulge in Thai cuisine

No visit to Phuket is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. From street food to fine dining, there’s something for every palate. Try dishes like Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong, or the southern speciality Massaman Curry

For a more immersive experience, join a Thai cooking class and learn how to recreate these dishes at home. I took one in Chiang Mai years ago, which remains a big highlight of my travel experiences!

Relax with a Thai massage

After a long day of exploring, treat yourself to a traditional Thai massage. Phuket has numerous spas offering everything from foot massages to full-body treatments. Oasis Spa and Let’s Relax Spa are popular choices, but you can also find smaller, budget-friendly places across the island.

Treat yourself to the luxury of renting a private flat

For those who seek the epitome of Phuket living, a private hillside flat with a 15-meter pool and breathtaking sea view is the ultimate choice. This luxurious option is tailor-made for travellers who value privacy, spaciousness, and the comfort of a home, all while basking in the allure of Thailand’s largest island. Here’s why this unique flat is a cut above the rest.

With four spacious rooms and five bathrooms, this hillside flat is ideal for families, groups of friends, or even couples who want extra space. Unlike staying in a hotel, where you may have to share facilities and common areas with other guests, a private flat allows you to relax in your own personal oasis. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, enjoying meals in the open-plan living room, or resting in the privacy of your suite, you’ll feel completely at ease.

Imagine waking up every morning to a panoramic sea view that stretches across the horizon. Being situated on a hillside gives you the advantage of unobstructed vistas, providing a peaceful and scenic backdrop to your stay. Whether you’re enjoying breakfast on the terrace, sipping a sunset cocktail, or taking a late-night dip in the pool, the breathtaking ocean view creates a serene and magical atmosphere that hotels rarely match.

This flat is not just a place to stay; it’s a haven of comfort. The pool is a refreshing start to your day or a soothing end to your adventures. With five bathrooms, waiting is never an issue, and the modern facilities ensure you can pamper yourself daily. The concierge service is your personal assistant, from making restaurant reservations to arranging private tours, ensuring your vacation is stress-free.

One of the best features of this luxurious flat is its prime location. While the hillside location offers peace and privacy, you’re still just 500 meters away from the beach and local restaurants. You can take a short stroll to the nearby restaurants to sample fresh Thai cuisine or walk to the beach for a swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Andaman Sea. You get the best of both worlds: tranquillity when you’re at home, and the vibrant energy of Phuket just minutes away.

When you’re in a foreign land, safety is paramount. This flat understands that, so it’s equipped with 24-hour security, giving you peace of mind. Whether relaxing by the pool, catching up on sleep, or venturing out to explore Phuket, you can rest easy knowing your accommodation is well-protected. The added convenience of a concierge service means you have a dedicated team to assist with any needs or emergencies.

With such a spacious flat, you’ll have the ideal setting for entertaining guests. Host a barbecue by the pool, or gather with friends in the open-plan living and dining areas. With its breathtaking views, the terrace is a perfect spot for evening drinks and conversations. Having the freedom to cook, relax, and socialise in a private space adds an extra layer of luxury to your stay, allowing you to feel at home in paradise.

In summary, renting a private hillside flat with a 15-meter pool and stunning sea views elevates your Phuket vacation to an unforgettable experience. The combination of luxury amenities, privacy, and prime location means you can enjoy all the island offers in the utmost comfort. Whether you want to explore the beaches, indulge in local cuisine, or unwind in your own private retreat, this flat provides the perfect base to experience Phuket fully while indulging in the luxury and beauty of this tropical paradise.

Random tips

I wrote a complete guide with tips and tricks on how to behave when travelling through SouthEast Asia, but a few quick reminders: when visiting temples, it’s essential to dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering. Also, it’s customary to show respect to Buddha statues by not turning your back to them.

Pack light, don’t forget your sunscreen, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready to explore Phuket.
